Ad Campaign For Candy Bar Hammers Away On The Theme: Eat Snickers Or Behave Badly

February 19, 2013: 12:00 AM EST
Mars Chocolate’s TV marketing campaign for its Snickers candy bar for the past two years focused on the idea that celebrities – Betty White, Robin Williams, Joe Pesci, etc. – are just regular people who behave badly without their candy fix. The successful and well regarded “You’re Not You When You’re Hungry” campaign was expanded into print with celebrities touting fake products, then later apologizing for their endorsements because they used poor judgment when they were hungry. The BBDO-created campaign has now taken a co-branding turn, offering, for example, discount coupons for online flower purchases, and the suggestion that you may have ignored the flower offer previously because you hadn’t had your Snickers fix.

Kraft Revamps Innovation Process, Bets Its Future On New Product Development

February 19, 2013: 12:00 AM EST
Five years ago, Kraft Foods Group was failing at new product development: 17 of the 19 products tested that year bombed. And 2009 wasn’t much different. Part of the problem was that the company lacked an ethos of innovation: ideas were small, the process lacked rigor and focus, there was little investment supporting product launches, and working in innovation was considered a dead-end job. But that situation is turning around. Kraft has outlined changes it is implementing to develop and support new products. It has created an “innovation playbook” that calls for increased investment in “fewer, bigger ideas” that receive a lot of company attention, according to Barry Calpino, who heads up the revamped  innovation process.

Danone Tightens Belt In Face Of Slack Consumer Demand, Weak European Economy

February 19, 2013: 12:00 AM EST
Danone has decided to eliminate 900 management and administrative positions in 26 European countries as a cost-cutting measure in response to significant profit declines in Europe. The changes are being implemented despite a 5.4 percent increase in sales in 2012. The cutbacks will be made through corporate restructuring and attrition over two years, the company said. The company blamed the cutbacks on a persistent downturn in the European economy coupled with declining consumer demand.

Unilever Promises To Improve Labor Practices In Vietnam After Oxfam Review

February 6, 2013: 12:00 AM EST
Unilever promised to improve labor practices in the company’s business operations in Vietnam after Oxfam discovered wage and labor union problems in one of the company’s factories in the country. According to Oxfam’s report, which covers the years 2011 and 2012, the factory workers’ wages are not enough for them to support dependents or save; suppliers and managers have no clear idea of the company’s codes of conduct; and workers are too afraid to air grievances or form unions. Moreover, workers employed by third parties suffer from worse terms and conditions, while suppliers force staff to work illegal overtime hours. Unilever said it will reorganize its Vietnam operations and will promote labor rights in the country, as well as in other emerging markets where it is currently operating.

Kraft Foods, which owns the trademark for the Cracker Barrel cheeses brand, has filed a federal lawsuit against Cracker Barrel country stores over plans to license its brand to a food company that sells a variety of packaged meats and other grocery store items, including oatmeal and muffin mix. Kraft says in its complaint that the restaurant chain’s plans “threaten to destroy the substantial goodwill that Kraft has created in its Cracker Barrel trademark, and to create significant confusion and cannot be permitted.” Cracker Barrel, which operates 621 restaurants in the U.S., says it is reviewing the suit and will comment later.

Graduate Student Suggests Five Ways Products Could Be “Packaged” Without Packaging

January 30, 2013: 12:00 AM EST
For his master’s thesis last semester, a Pratt Institute student presented five ideas that take the package out of product packaging. The ideas are designed to help reduce the huge amount of boxes, bags, containers and inserts – 70 million tons annually – that clog U.S. landfills. Aaron Mickelson suggests, for example, that dissolving detergent pods, currently sold in plastic jugs or bags, could be arranged in a single, perforated sheet, rolled into a cylinder and stacked on store shelves. As consumers used the pods, the product would gradually disappear, with no package to dispose of.

Peanut Butter Project Tests Beneficial Effects Of Whey Protein On Malnourished African Children

January 24, 2013: 12:00 AM EST
The humanitarian organization known as the Project Peanut Butter (PPB) that developed a Ready-To-Use Therapeutic Food to battle childhood malnutrition in African countries, is launching a clinical trial to determine whether adding whey protein to the mix would provide even greater health benefits. The current nutritional supplement – a mix of peanuts, powdered milk, oil, sugar, vitamins and minerals – is energy dense, resists spoiling, does not need to be cooked and can be given in small amounts. The organization is testing whether lactose-rich whey permeate – a by-product of cheese making– would benefit immature digestive systems by promoting mineral  absorption and stimulating beneficial bacteria growth in the gut, creating a stronger digestive and immune system.

January 14, 2013: 12:00 AM EST
Pakistan’s economy is expanding, with its gross domestic product growing at around 15–16 percent, according to Unilever Pakistan chairman and chief executive officer Ehsan Malik. Also, the fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) market is expanding at about 20–25 percent. Malik said many factors are driving the FMCG market’s growth in Pakistan including Pakistanis’ willingness to spend and the expanding urbanization in the country. Also, market growth is supported by a boom in the country’s rural economy, as well as by FMCG companies’ efforts to penetrate rural markets.

Food And Personal Care Departments Drive Unilever's Growth

January 4, 2013: 12:00 AM EST
Personal care products accounted for about 40 percent of Unilever’s revenue in 2011 and around 44 percent of the company’s stock value. Unilever’s grocery segment contributed about 30 percent of its revenue during the same period, lower from around 35 percent in 2008. The company reorganized its grocery business strategy by consolidating its product lineup. By divesting some of its brands, Unilever has improved profitability from an operating margin of 15.6 percent in 2009 to 20 percent despite the decline in sales. While Unilever’s grocery sales come mainly from developed markets, increased uptake in emerging markets may ensure the company’s long-term growth.

Stay-At-Home Men Catch The Attention Of Grocery Stores, Food Manufacturers

December 30, 2012: 12:00 AM EST
Recent consumer research has found that the number of men who are their family’s primary food shopped has risen six percent in five years. Another study found that 31 percent of grocery shopping is now done by men, up from 14 percent in the 1980s. The trend has not gone unnoticed by grocery stores and food manufacturers: they are paying much closer attention to the needs of men who are either working at home or looking for a job. About a year ago, for example, Shop ’n Save created an in-house gender-neutral private label line called “Essential Everyday,” packaged to appeal to both men and women. A small grocery chain in New York City is stocking end caps with man-centric items. And Target and Walmart, among others, are considering setting up “man aisles.”

Unilever Would Participate More In EU-Sponsored R&D, If Bureaucratic Roadblocks Were Removed

December 20, 2012: 12:00 AM EST
Unilever says it would participate in joint R&D programs sponsored by the European Union, but needs the EU to reduce the bureaucratic complexity that is currently a hindrance. According to the company’s R&D chief, Dr. Hans Dröge, Unilever is interested in participating in the EU's Horizon 2020 research program for 2014-2020, for example, because of its Compass strategy, whose goal is to double sales while cutting the environmental impact. The strategy requires R&D to come up with technology breakthroughs, and some of that R&D needs to be external. The barriers to participating in external R&D include the legalities associated with joining consortiums, problems with intellectual property and problems with process control in Brussels.

Kraft Patents Technology For Tooth-Whitening Gum

December 6, 2012: 12:00 AM EST
Tooth whitening peroxide solutions typically have been delivered in gel form because of interaction problems with other types of compounds. Now Kraft has developed a tooth-whitening chewing gum that encapsulates solid peroxide in the gum base. After conducting successful human tests, the company filed a patent for the technology. The tests showed that a combination of 4 percent carbamide peroxide and 4 percent sodium tripolyphosphate achieved a whitening increase that allows the manufacturer to legally claim that chewing the gum “results in two shades whiter teeth to the user.”

Unilever Is Optimistic About Its Ability To Double Revenue With New Product Development

December 4, 2012: 12:00 AM EST
Despite slow growth in its North American food business, and some pessimism about the global economy, Unilever management remains optimistic about its ability to achieve its corporate revenue target of $105 billion, double the current level. The “tangible sense of self belief and optimism,” according to one securities analyst, stems from the value of new products in  development, rather than the number. The company has only 600 new products in the pipeline, compared to 5,000 seven years ago. But it has twice as many $65 million projects on the drawing board and it is rolling them out at a much faster clip.

Unilever Will Sell More Food Business Units, CEO Says

November 30, 2012: 12:00 AM EST
Unilever will sell more food business units as part of its focus on personal care products and emerging markets, according to company chief executive officer Paul Polman. Economic slowdown has affected its food sales, about 60 percent of which come from developed markets such as the United States and Europe. In 2011, food was Unilever’s only business that posted a decline in sales; shipments declined 1.2 percent in the first nine months of 2012. Despite Unilever’s efforts to shift more food sales to developing markets, the slowdown in food business continues, Polman said.

Pakistan Is Prime Focus Of Unilever’s Global Growth Strategy

November 22, 2012: 12:00 AM EST
Unilever is targeting 16 countries in emerging markets – including Pakistan – as the foundation of its future global growth, according to top executives. Currently, about 56 percent of the company’s revenue comes from emerging markets, and that number is expected to grow to 75 percent in the next few years. Unilever’s revenues in Pakistan in 2011 grew 9.9 percent, compared to global revenue growth of five percent. A key reason for the growth – and Unilever’s interest – is the rapid expansion of the country’s middle class, with its rising purchasing power and tendency to buy branded products. The company is also aggressively seeking to reach consumers in small towns and rural areas.

Proposed Financial Reporting Method Includes Value Of Sustainability

November 15, 2012: 12:00 AM EST
More than 80 companies, including Clorox, Microsoft, and Coca-Cola, are evaluating the use of an integrated financial reporting framework that merges measurable financial results with sustainability, social, and regulatory factors. Overseen by the International Integrated Reporting Council, the pilot program aims to measure how sustainable a company’s operations are by considering the costs and benefits of its environmental strategies. Under the framework, companies must report all material information, including its sustainability goals and metrics. The IIRC believes integrated reporting, such as the pilot program, can help investors determine a company’s ability to generate cash flows.

Unilever CEO Thinks Capitalism Needs Some Fixing

November 14, 2012: 12:00 AM EST
Unilever chief executive officer Paul Polman said he thinks capitalism as it is right now is burdened with several weaknesses, including its over-consumption of natural resources. Polman said the inability of international organizations to deal with the effects of globalization only worsens the impact of resource depletion, which is forecast to get worse in the future. Unilever’s move against quarterly financial reporting was aimed at reforming the company’s culture that was too focused on short-term results. Also, Unilever’s integration of sustainability into its business operations and enhancement of its competitiveness helped improve its revenue performance.

India's FMCG Market Sees Slower Growth In September Quarter 2012

November 11, 2012: 12:00 AM EST
India's fast moving consumer goods market saw slower growth rates during the quarter ended September 2012, compared with the previous quarters. Hindustan Unilever, for example, reported its volume grew 7 percent during the quarter, down from 9–10 percent of the earlier periods due to lower sales in personal care products. Marico also reported lower growth rates, from 13–14 percent to 6 percent. Factors, including the recent increase in fuel prices, are likely to hit consumers' discretionary spending, further eroding FMCG companies' ability to achieve their sales targets.
