Mondelez Reportedly Seeking To Acquire Hershey Co.

June 30, 2016: 12:00 AM EST
Mondelez International Inc., the snack foods spinoff from Kraft, is angling to acquire Hershey Co., but needs approval from Hershey’s largest stockholder (eight percent), the Hershey Trust. The news of a possible merger sent Hershey’s stock up 20 percent. Both companies would benefit from a deal: Mondelez would immediately have an expanded confections product line, while Hershey would have access to the marketing infrastructure it needs to expand abroad. According to The Wall Street Journal, which first broke the story, Mondelez promised to rename the company Hershey, headquarter its global chocolate business in Hershey, Pa., and protect jobs.
