Will The “Taco Waffle” Catch On In The Booming Fast-Food Breakfast World?

May 16, 2013: 12:00 AM EST
At Taco Bell, a taco needn’t necessarily be a fried, folded tortilla packed with beef, beans and lettuce. It can also be a waffle, folded to look like a tortilla, and packed with scrambled egg, sausage and syrup. The company has been testing the new 89¢ Waffle Taco in restaurants in Southern California, according to USA Today, but has been fairly quiet about it until recently. Its introduction is timely: breakfast is the fastest growing category in the fast-food business. The company says the product is now generating social media buzz; if it catches on it will roll out to all Taco Bells that serve breakfast this summer. There are some doubts about the product’s viability. Culinary expert Andrew Smith says, "It's really just breakfast with a taco name. What's so taco-ish about that?"
